(flyer as pdf) ”Pentti Malaska – A visionary and forerunner” is an intellectual biography of the life and work of Professor Pentti Malaska. Pentti Malaska played a key pioneering role in developing and establishing the academic discipline of futures studies not only in Finland, but also internationally. He earned his doctorate in electrical engineering, but his research cut across a range of fields from engineering, business mathematics and operations research through to strategic management, philosophy and deep ecology.

This book provides an insight into the futures research ideas, theories and methods developed by Pentti Malaska. It also addresses some of his key areas of research interest, such as the role of human potential in driving humankind’s development and ways of repairing humankind’s broken relationship with nature. The book gives a voice to Pentti Malaska’s close colleagues and friends, who consider his life’s achievements and look back at their collaboration with Pentti.

This volume has been compiled as a tribute to a true pioneer of futures research. Were it not for Pentti Malaska, we would not have such a strong culture of futures studies and foresight in Finland; nor would we have the Finnish Society for Futures Studies; and nor would we have the Finland Futures Research Centre. Our hope is that this book will further awareness about Pentti Malaska’s immortal ideas and inspire next-generation futures researchers and other readers interested in building a better world.

Elämäkertateos esittelee suomalaisen tulevaisuudentutkimuksen pioneerin Pentti Malaskan mittavaa elämäntyötä 

Pentti Malaska – ennalta näkijä, edellä kulkija -elämäkertateos kokoaa yhteen Turun kauppakorkeakoulun professorin ja Tulevaisuuden tutkimuskeskuksen perustajan Pentti Malaskan (1934–2012) uraauurtavaa tulevaisuusajattelua ja tutkimustyötä. Pentti Malaska oli rohkea visionääri, joka muun muassa visioi kiertotaloutta jo 1970-luvulla ja joka kutsuttiin ensimmäisenä suomalaisena globaaleja ongelmia ratkovaan Rooman klubiin.

Pentti Malaska oli myös aktiivinen yhteiskunnallinen keskustelija, joka halusi perustaa suomalaisen energiapolitiikan tieteellisen tutkimustiedon pohjalle. Pentti Malaska oli toimeltaan tilastomatematiikan professori ja koulutukseltaan sähkötekniikan tohtori, mutta hänen tutkimustyönsä ylitti kaikki oppiainerajat aina strategiseen johtamiseen, teoreettiseen filosofiaan ja syväekologiaan.

‒ Kirja on koottu kunnianosoituksena tulevaisuudentutkimuksen pioneerille, jota ilman Suomeen ei olisi kehittynyt nykyistä vahvaa tulevaisuudentutkimuksen ja ennakoinnin kulttuuria, Tulevaisuuden tutkimuksen seuraa tai Turun yliopiston Tulevaisuuden tutkimuskeskusta. Toivomme, että tämän kirjan myötä Pentin kuolemattomat ajatukset jatkavat eteenpäin ja inspiroivat seuraavien sukupolvien tulevaisuudentutkijoita ja muita paremman maailman rakentamisesta kiinnostuneita lukijoita, kertoo professori Markku Wilenius, yksi kirjan toimittajista.

Elämäkertateoksen ovat toimittaneet Laura Pouru, Markku Wilenius, Karin Holstius ja Sirkka Heinonen. Kirja julkaistaan Tulevaisuuden tutkimuksen seuran Tulevaisuussarjassa ja se on laadittu Turun kauppakorkeakoulun tukisäätiön apurahoituksella.

Huhtikuussa 2017 Tulevaisuuden tutkimuskeskus avaa myös Pentti Malaskan nimeä kantavan tulevaisuuspalkintohaun. Palkinnon arvo on 30 000 euroa, ja sillä halutaan tukea rohkeaa, rajat ylittävää, eteenpäin katsovaa keksintöä, konseptia tai toimintatapaa, joka rakentaa parempaa globaalia tulevaisuutta. Sekä professori Malaskan elämäkertateoksen julkaisu että tulevaisuuspalkinnon jakaminen ovat osa Tulevaisuuden tutkimuskeskuksen 25-vuotisjuhlavuotta.

Intellectual biography of professor Pentti Malaska published

An intellectual biography of professor Pentti Malaska was published on March 21^st, 2017. Pentti Malaska was the founder of the Finland Futures Research Centre (1992) and the Finnish Society for Futures Studies (1980). He played a significant role in the establishment and development of the academic field of Futures Studies, particularly in Finland, but also throughout the world. Pentti Malaska was a radical visionary thinker whose research interests widely crossed academic disciplines, from mathematics and electrical engineering to philosophy, ecology, and strategic management.

The biography is mainly written in Finnish but it includes an English synopsis that consists of three articles that explore the nature of futures research, Pentti Malaska’s futures thinking, and his theory of societal change in the context of human-centric organizations. In addition, the biography contains poems written in English by Pentti Malaska himself and a few texts from his international colleagues looking back at their co-operation with him.

The biography is edited by Laura Pouru, Markku Wilenius, Karin Holstius, and Sirkka Heinonen and published in the Futures Series (Tulevaisuussarja) of The Finnish Society for Futures Studies. The compilation of the biography was funded by the Turku School of Economics Foundation.
